Unite! Vision for Serving Public Schools
“Half Hour Hero” was initiated by Unite!, a network of 150 plus churches in metro Atlanta partnering with businesses, governments, public schools, and non-profits to make a positive difference in our communities and city.   Our vision and dream is that every child in metro Atlanta who needs a mentor or tutor would have one.  To accomplish this vision, at a macro level, churches are “adopting” public schools to pray for and send in volunteers to serve.  At a micro level, individuals from businesses, neighborhoods, and churches are serving as “Half Hour Heroes.”  For more information, statistics, and the vision of Unite! for the public schools, click here.

Gwinnett County Public Schools – Overview on Mentoring Needs

Gwinnett County Public Schools are in need of community volunteers to serve as mentors (i.e. being a friend) and tutors for elementary and middle school students that may be lacking a positive adult influence in their life or just need some extra help with their school work.  In most cases, the mentoring needs are for boys who don’t have a dad at home and could use the positive influence of an adult male.  Through Unite! churches all throughout Gwinnett County are teaming up with Gwinnett County Public Schools to encourage citizens, neighbors, corporations, and churches to help mobilize volunteers from our communities to serve as

mentors in our public schools.

About “Half Hour Hero” – Elementary & Middle School Focus

Half Hour Hero is a call to action (more than a program) to mobilize volunteers throughout our communities to volunteer in our local public schools by being a friend to a student in need of a positive adult influence or in need of help with tutoring.  Half Hour Hero was initiated by, Unite! a network of approximately 140 metro Atlanta churches partnering together for community transformation.  Unite! churches are working in partnership with businesses, city and county governments, public schools, non-profits, and any other organizations that care about our communities and city.  Half Hour Hero focuses on spending 30 minutes per week, during the school day, on campus (often at lunch time), being a friend to an elementary school aged child.  For more information on Half Hour Heroes, contact Drue Warner at druew@perimeter.org or 404-906-9117 (cell).

NOTE: Sugar Hill Elementary is promoting Half Hour Hero, and the City of Duluth, under the leadership of Mayor Nancy Harris, is working with all Duluth cluster schools, local businesses and churches to promote Half Hour Hero.

About “Community Based Mentoring” – Middle School Focus

Gwinnett County Public Schools is addressing the need for mentors in our middle schools through a program known as Community Based Mentoring that focuses on spending 1 hour per week, after school, off campus, being a friend to a middle school aged child.  Gwinnett County is looking to offer resources to mentors as a way to connect with their mentees (i.e. free admission to all Gwinnett County High School football games, restaurant coupons, etc.).  For more information on Gwinnett County’s “Community Based Mentoring” program, contact James Rayford at james_rayford@gwinnett.k12.ga.us or 678-301-7321 (office).
